Chapter 802: Base Captured
Chapter 802: Base Captured
The formations regrouped again and centered around the tunnel entrance. This was the only remaining area left uncleared and unaffected by the bombardment.
The squad leader frowned, understanding there might still be surviving terrorists inside. She ordered several soldiers to follow her in and conduct a clearance operation.
Tunnel warfare, to her dismay. She had no idea how many enemies remained or what the layout looked like. The enemies would be prepared now that they had recovered from the bombardment.
She chose several subordinates and ordered the rest to stand guard. Just as she prepared to lead the team in, she was stopped by the GSS operatives.
"What?" she asked.
"Let us take the lead. This is our expertise," a GSS operator whispered and gestured for her fellow Spirit Fox members to follow.
"But do you even have tunnel warfare experience…" she wanted to argue.
"Cut it off. With your squad's monoculars, it's a fair question whether you can even see clearly," the operator replied before signaling her group to advance.
"You can advise us from behind when needed," another GSS operative said, patting her back before moving forward.
The squad leader paused and glanced at her subordinates. Yeah, their monocular night vision goggles weren't the most efficient equipment for CQB in tight spaces, especially tunnel warfare.
It seemed the advice was right. Comparing their monoculars to the quad NVGs worn by GSS, the squad leader sighed in envy.
She wasn't jealous. Heck, this battle was the first time her troops had fully equipped themselves with night vision devices.
In fact, the entire militia was now capable of conducting night operations. What more could they ask for as a quasi-military force?
Before, only a handful of core special commandos possessed monocular NVGs. Now even the regulars had their turn.
"Careful ahead," the squad leader warned. "According to our past experience, these tunnel areas should contain hostages."
"Hostages?"
"Women."
"Ah." The Spirit Fox operators immediately understood the implication.
Ahead, two point Spirit Fox warrioresses advanced with their muzzles crisscrossed. Under the cover of total darkness, the duo caught sight of a faint dim light before it was quickly extinguished.
They knew the terrorists were either preparing to ambush them by using darkness to their advantage or attempting to hide. The former was more likely, given the noise they had made before entering.
Regardless, the operators sneered at the terrorists' pitiful predicament. The enemy had no idea the women they were facing were fully capable of fighting in complete darkness.
Slowly, they advanced meter by meter before reaching the original source of the dim light.
The duo heard whispers in bizarre languages, along with hissing and smacking sounds. Turning on their IR torchlights, the darkness dissipated.
Usually, fighting with night vision devices involved two types of aiming—passive and active.
Passive aiming simply meant looking through the scope like during daylight, though the image could become blurry and inaccurate at longer distances.
Meanwhile, active aiming required operators to shine IR lasers, which worked tremendously well against enemies lacking night-fighting capability.
After all, every laser was equivalent to shouting out their own positions for enemies to exploit. Likewise, the IR beamlight would expose the duo's location if the enemy possessed night vision.
Nonetheless, the terrorists lacked such means to counter them, so the Spirit Fox operatives relaxed their discipline slightly.
The soldiers behind the group could also see more clearly despite the narrow viewing angles created by the light source. Suddenly, a stick-like silhouette caught the pointwoman's attention.
Without hesitation, she fired instinctively. She didn't even aim or activate her laser before firing five shots at the suspicious movement.
Puff! Puff! Puff! Puff! Puff!
Clank! Clank!
The latter sound belonged to a rifle being blasted out of the shooter's hands before falling onto the rocky ground.
The Spirit Fox operatives had already developed paranoia toward blind-firing techniques. Back in Province N, every member had repeatedly encountered enemies poking rifles around corners and firing blindly without aiming.
They hated it to the point of developing instinctive reactions against it. Not to mention, after training for so long, their marksmanship had become second nature, allowing them to aim and fire accurately at lightning speed.
Exploiting the advantage, she stepped forward and tried to gain a better angle. Had the militia squad leader behind her not warned about possible hostages, she and the girl beside her would have pre-fired immediately.
Listening to muffled curses, she grinned and leaned slightly to catch sight of a foot and frantic hand movements. Obviously, her shots had severely injured the terrorist's hand.
Puff!
"Ahhh!" A painful howl erupted.
Puff!
Silence.
The first shot struck the exposed foot, causing the body to twitch and expose itself further. She ended the terrorist's scream with a shot through the head.
Bang! Bang! Bang!
She immediately retracted from her lean as bullets whizzed past her elbow and slammed into the wall behind her. Dust and debris showered over her figure.
"Bang up! Long!"
"On it."
Her partner pulled out a flashbang and hurled it forward with force.
Boom!
A deafening burst of light and sound blinded the enemies, proven by the groans and the sudden halt in gunfire. The pointwoman immediately killed several targets while her partner knelt beneath her. Both muzzles flashed multiple times for nearly a dozen seconds, accompanied by falling thuds.
The squad leader watched in amazement at the accurate shots and efficient movements of the GSS teams until the gunfire ceased again, leaving only silence and a few shouting commands from the terrorists.
Their resistance still existed even if it was futile. The formation advanced with GSS smoothly clearing the tunnel while her subordinates lingered behind leisurely, covering angles if needed.
Other than that, they remained relaxed while feeling guilty that outsiders were risking their lives in their stead.
They had no idea the reason Spirit Fox refused them entry was because the AK rifles in their hands lacked IR lasers to facilitate night combat. With passive aiming plus the narrow angle of monocular night vision, disaster was only inevitable.
The two pointwomen initiated tactical reloads, refilling fresh magazines alternately before trekking forward.
After clearing every ambush for twenty meters, the duo saw an enlarged cavern. Just then, a small object tumbled out of nowhere in fright and rolled to the pointwoman's feet.
The Spirit Fox operator kicked it back with ease toward the direction it came from while shouting, "Grenade!"
The poor terrorist who threw it exclaimed in fright, his scream reverberating through the tunnel multiple times before being silenced by a loud boom!
Small sprays of sand ruptured around them. A few grains even struck the Spirit Fox operators' trousers.
The militias behind were completely stunned by GSS's response. Heck, even the kick was accurate. While they had backed off to give the pointwomen space, they never expected such reactions. Their panicked behavior looked comical compared to the foreign supporters.
In the open enlarged space, the group spread out and covered every sector. Spirit Fox volunteered for the most dangerous path.
The militia also discovered a few women hiding with little clothing on. They took over the role of vigilance while comforting the hostages.
Afterward, automatic gunfire erupted from an unknown distance, followed by women's panicked shouts. The squad leader's pupils constricted and she immediately shouted, "Hurry! They are executing the hostages!"
Hearing this, the Spirit Fox operatives rushed toward the source and found two gunmen lining the women up and spraying them one by one. Three women collapsed, their conditions unknown.
Spirit Fox extinguished the terrorists' lives the moment they gained sight of them, ending the tragedy.
Puff! Puff!
The operators delivered secondary insurance shots into every terrorist corpse.
"Control! Control!"
"Last room. Clear!"
The militia squad leader heaved a heavy breath and tended to the hostages, checking their status after learning the area was secured.
These poor women had been dragged from nearby villages simply to serve the terrorists. They had no involvement in the fighting and were merely living their lives. As for the males, they had either become terrorists themselves or been killed straightaway.
Spirit Fox also helped provide the necessary medical care to the injured soldiers and hostages after completely taking over the place.
The squad leader reported the successful clearance of the operation. The platoon leader congratulated everyone and ordered her support-by-fire force to rejoin the assault element.
She also asked the GSS operator with the drone to scan around the perimeter for any remaining terrorist signatures while personally managing the aftermath of the battle, checking on casualties and listening to the reports of the engagement.
Next, she reported the successful capture of the terrorist base to HQ and beamed with joy. A victorious smirk appeared on her face as she heard that her unit was the first to accomplish the task.
Being the earliest meant she could brag to her fellow commanders for days to come with pride. Although the annoying casualty figures of slipping on the slope entered her mind, she threw the negativity away.
Hmph, she must teach her girls some lessons to prevent such carelessness.
