Chapter 25: Lively Scene
Chapter 25: Lively Scene
That laugh rang in Jiangzhou's ears.
His ears tickled. "What are you laughing at?"
Yuan Xiu pursed her lips. "It's nothing. By the way, why did you bring so many bicycles? When did you find them?"
Jiang Zhou certainly wouldn't discuss this with her. Just because she didn't make any requests doesn't mean he wouldn't prepare.
Jiang Zhou put Yuan Xiu down, straddled a bicycle with his long legs, and patted the back seat: "Get on."
Yuan Xiu sat down and firmly gripped the back seat with one hand.
Jiang Zhou glanced back at her. "The road is uneven. Grab my waist."
After saying that, he pushed off with his foot, and the bicycle glided forward quickly.
Due to inertia, Yuan Xiu's body leaned forward, and she subconsciously reached out a hand to grab the clothes around his waist.
But in his heart he was thinking, "Where is the road uneven?"
It was clearly because you were riding too fast.
Yuan Xiu glanced back and saw nine bicycles adorned with large red flowers following closely behind them. Sister Chunmei and the others also got on the bicycles. When they saw Yuan Xiu turn around, Sister Chunmei and the others waved to her.
It's only a ten-minute walk from the guesthouse to the new house, and even faster by bicycle.
Yuan Xiu originally thought they would arrive soon, but Jiang Zhou turned the handlebars and took her on another road.
The people behind cheered, "Battalion Commander Jiang, take the bride for a couple more laps! Don't rush! Haha!"
Jiang Zhou led Yuan Xiu on a tour of the entire residential area, attracting many onlookers.
Now, there are probably very few people in the entire residential area who don't know that they got married.
In the tenement building, Zhou Lei and his mother were tidying up the house allocated to them by the army. They saw the wedding procession passing by.
Zhou's mother patted the dust off her clothes. "You should go and join in the fun later. Bring a piece of cloth that I wove for you."
Zhou Lei nodded, "Then I'll bring Yuan Juan with me."
"Why are you bringing her along?" Zhou's mother rolled her eyes at him. "Everyone in this compound knows what she's done. Are you just trying to upset them or make them laugh at you two?"
Zhou Lei didn't think that much about it. "They are cousins. In a sense, Yuan Juan is from the bride's family. There's no such thing as holding a grudge overnight between relatives. What's done is done. Once the house is ready, Yuan Juan and I will also hold a wedding. We will definitely invite Battalion Commander Jiang and his wife."
"So what if she's my cousin? The things she did could turn even sisters into enemies."
Zhou's mother waved her hand and said, "Listen to me, you go alone. Don't mention any relatives or anything like that. Just treat it as a visit between your comrades. That Battalion Commander Jiang is a young man who is already a full battalion-level officer. He's a capable person. You can't go wrong if you get along well with him."
Zhou Lei nodded, "Okay, I'll go over later."
"Don't wait any longer, let's go now." Zhou's mother said, and took out a piece of blue homespun cloth folded into a long strip, with flowers and leaves printed on it using plant dyes, from her luggage.
She originally intended to make bed sheets from this material, but it's perfect for giving as a gift now.
She unfolded the fabric and folded it again, muttering under her breath about Yuan Juan as she did so, "So lazy! She knew the logistics department was delivering furniture today, but she didn't even offer to help tidy up."
"She's not feeling well," Zhou Lei explained.
"What's wrong with her? I think she's too ashamed to show her face! Once you two are married, you'll have to train her properly, otherwise, you won't have a smooth life."
Zhou Lei nodded helplessly, "She's young and doesn't understand anything. You can teach her slowly."
Zhou's mother handed him the fabric, saying, "Go quickly."
……
Quite a few people have already arrived at the new house. Sister Guiying and two other military wives are busy in the kitchen. No food needs to be prepared, but boiling water and tea still need to be made.
The candies bought from the city were placed on a plate lined with red paper.
Peanuts and melon seeds were mixed together and placed in the courtyard for the guests to eat.
Several packs of cigarettes were also placed on the table for people to take.
Li Shan stood at the door helping to greet the guests. "Why hasn't Jiang Zhou come back yet? Where did he take the bride?"
Instructor Liu said, "Why do you care where they took her? It's not like it's your son getting married, what's the rush?"
"screw you……"
As the two were chatting, they heard children outside shouting, "The bride is here!"
Yuan Xiu didn't expect so many people to be in the new house. The courtyard was almost full, with many more tables, chairs, and benches brought from the neighbors' houses.
The presence of the wedding party and the courtyard full of guests demonstrates that Jiang Zhou is exceptionally popular within the military.
As soon as the bride arrived, the guests began to cheer, "The bride is so beautiful!"
"Battalion Commander Jiang is so lucky!"
"Where's the apple? Where's the apple? We need to get the bride and groom to play a game for us!"
Someone took out an apple, dropped it into the air with a string, and let Yuan Xiu and Jiang Zhou bite it.
Yuan Xiu's cheeks were so red they looked like they could drip blood; she didn't know whether to bite or not.
"Don't bite it?" The women behind her pushed her toward the apple.
She took a bite, but before she could even open her mouth, the person holding the apple mischievously caused her to almost bump face-to-face with Jiang Zhou.
"Bite it already!"
"Don't be shy, bride."
"Battalion Commander Jiang, are you sure you can handle this?"
Jiang Zhou stood as firmly as a wooden stake, and several people behind him tried to push him but couldn't budge him.
He glanced at Yuan Xiu's misty eyes and sensed that if everyone kept teasing her, she was about to cry.
Jiang Zhou snatched the apple, took a bite for himself, and then handed it to Yuan Xiu.
Yuan Xiu: "..."
Fortunately, she reacted quickly and took a bite of the apple.
game over!
Everyone was extremely disappointed.
"Battalion Commander Jiang, you're cheating!"
"It doesn't count! It doesn't count! Never, never!"
Jiang Zhou finished an apple in a few bites, handed the core to the young man who was asking for more, and raised an eyebrow.
Let's see what you bring next.
Young man, "...Do you have any more apples? Bring me another one."
"That's all, just this one."
Everyone was extremely disappointed.
What a great opportunity, just like that, gone to waste.
Guests came and went; some stayed, while others offered their blessings, brought small gifts, and took a couple of candies before leaving.
When Zhou Lei arrived, the apple-eating game had just ended.
He delivered the materials, offered a few words of congratulations to Jiang Zhou and Yuan Xiu, sat for a while, drank a cup of tea, and then left.
After all the guests had left, Yuan Xiu was too tired to move.
It wasn't the work that was tiring, but the laughter. In the past half day, she had met quite a few people, but she could only remember the names of a few.
My mind was completely blank, like it was filled with mush, and all I could do was laugh.
After everyone left, Sister Chunmei and the others helped return all the chairs to their respective homes and also helped clean up the scattered sunflower seed shells and peanut shells in the yard.
There were no candy wrappers left; the children had already picked them up.
Yuan Xiu and Jiang Zhou saw their sisters-in-law off to the door after they finished helping out, and then let out a heavy sigh of relief after watching them walk away.
"Tired?"
