Chapter 343 - 265: If You Want to Condemn Someone, You Can Always Find a Pretext
The Superpower Administration Bureau received a report about the incident. Upon learning that a Mutant Beast had appeared in the area and nearly killed someone, they immediately dispatched Investigators to the scene.
On the gridlocked highway, drivers saw a helicopter approaching from the distance.
"ROOOAR..."
The sound of the helicopter echoed over a wide area, and many people heard its approach.
Lin Li and Su Yue, who were sitting in their car enjoying the AC and playing mobile games, naturally heard it too.
"Lin Li, look! I think that’s a helicopter from the Superpower Administration Bureau," Su Yue said, leaning forward to get a better look at the approaching aircraft after hearing the noise.
Lin Li wasn’t surprised. He had already guessed the Superpower Administration Bureau would send a helicopter to the scene.
"It’s just a helicopter. It’s not like we’ve never seen one before. Nothing to get so worked up about..." Lin Li said with a smile.
After the helicopter carrying the Investigators reached its destination, the pilot lowered its altitude. Then, two Investigators leaped out of the cabin from dozens of meters in the air.
Everyone who witnessed this was shocked by the sight of the two Investigators jumping from the helicopter, and they let out a collective gasp.
"AHH..."
The two Investigators plummeted toward the ground. Without some kind of trick up their sleeves, a fall at this speed would certainly be fatal.
"HUMMM..."
Just as they were about ten meters from the ground, a faint golden Spiritual Light appeared around one of the Investigators. Then, a white mist began to form around his body.
The sudden mist instantly enveloped his companion as well. Then, like a cloud, the white mist cushioned their fall, allowing them to descend gently to the ground.
"That Superpower is so cool! It looks like they’re riding the clouds." Su Yue watched as the two Investigators landed safely as if cushioned by a cloud, her eyes filled with envy.
"That Superpower is definitely cool... I just wonder if that cloud can actually let them fly, or if it only breaks their fall," Lin Li said, rubbing his chin.
"That’s strange. Why did those two Investigators land here? Did something happen nearby?" Su Yue asked, confused. She had no idea about the Wild Boar Beast that had attacked people in the woods earlier.
"Who knows? In any case, it has nothing to do with us," Lin Li, who knew exactly what was going on, said casually, changing the subject.
"Alright, stop staring at those Investigators. Hurry up and move your character. The poison circle is about to close in."
"Oh." Su Yue nodded, her attention successfully diverted by Lin Li. She looked back down and continued playing the game with him.
While playing the game with Su Yue, Lin Li glanced out the car window and noticed the young man and woman he had saved earlier meeting with the two Investigators who had just arrived.
The two victims were telling the Investigators something, but due to the distance and the car window, Lin Li naturally couldn’t hear their conversation.
’It doesn’t matter anyway,’ Lin Li thought. ’There’s no way they can trace it back to me. And even if they did track me down, it’s not a big deal. I was just doing a good deed, not committing a crime.’
’The only problem is, with Su Yue here, my identity as a Cultivator would be exposed if they came looking for me. That would be hard to explain.’
Su Yue maneuvered her game character toward the marked destination. When she arrived, she realized her teammate wasn’t with her.
She checked the map and saw that Lin Li’s character was just standing there in the distance, idle.
"Lin Li, what are you doing? Why are you just standing there spaced out?"
Lost in his thoughts, Lin Li snapped back to reality when he heard Su Yue’s call. He gave her an apologetic smile and quickly moved his character toward her position.
On the side of the road, the taller of the two Investigators asked the young man and woman who had reported the incident.
"Would you mind taking us to the scene?"
He then added a reassuring comment to the young couple, who had narrowly escaped death and still looked shaken, "Don’t worry, it won’t be dangerous. We’ll protect you."
With the Investigator’s guarantee, the young man and woman nodded. They then led the two Investigators toward the spot where they had encountered the Wild Boar Beast.
Inside the dim forest, two beams of light cut through the gloom, brightly illuminating a large area.
Following the beams of light to their source, one would see the two Investigators holding flashlights, lighting the way for the young man and woman who were guiding them.
"This is the place. We encountered that wild boar right here," the young couple said, stopping and turning to the Investigators behind them.
The two Investigators scanned their surroundings, their eyes landing on a pool of blood on the ground.
"That’s weird, where did the Mutant Beast’s body go?" the woman whispered.
"Yeah... How is the Mutant Beast’s body gone? You don’t think another Mutant Beast dragged it away?"
Hearing his girlfriend’s quiet murmur, the man realized it too.
The body of that terrifying wild boar had vanished in such a short time.
The two Investigators approached the pool of blood on the ground, crouched down, and carefully examined the area around it.
"There’s no sign of any other creature coming here and dragging away the dead Mutant Beast’s body."
"This is strange. According to the reporting party’s description, the Wild Boar Beast wasn’t huge, but it wasn’t small either."
"Moving it would have definitely left some kind of trace at the scene, but now the dead Wild Boar Beast’s body is gone. What’s going on here?"
Just as the two Investigators and the young couple were completely baffled by the disappearance of the Wild Boar Beast’s body, back on the highway outside the dim forest, traffic began to flow again. The cars that had been stuck for some time started to move forward slowly.
"Alright, traffic is moving. We’ll play again later," Lin Li said.
He put his phone away and drove the car at a steady pace, following the vehicle that was already several meters ahead.
Su Yue, in the passenger seat, was still maneuvering her character. "I’m going to win this round all by myself, just you watch..." she said to the driving Lin Li, as she made her character hide in a thick patch of grass.
"Investigator, the dead wild boar is gone. Could there be another ferocious Mutant Beast hiding in the forest that dragged it away?" the woman asked, nervously glancing around the dark areas of the woods.
The taller Investigator shook his head. "Based on the traces we’ve found at the scene, there are no tracks from any other Mutant Beasts."
"Then why did the Mutant Beast’s body disappear in such a short time?" the young woman asked again.
The two Investigators were completely baffled themselves and couldn’t understand why this had happened.
The taller Investigator shook his head again. "What exactly happened? We’ll only know after a follow-up investigation. For now, this is all we can do."
"Thank you both for bringing us to the scene. Leave the rest to us. You should head back to your car. The road outside should be clear soon, so we won’t delay your trip any further."
The young man and woman nodded and then walked quickly out of the dim forest.
They were more than happy to leave this place where they had almost lost their lives as soon as possible.
