Chapter 54, Wave 2 begins
Chapter 54, Wave 2 begins
Because the buffer zones on the east and west sides were blown to pieces in the previous firefight, the defensive line of the six-man Black Scythe Squad was severely compressed.
Eugene lay prone under the vehicle, staring at the tactical tablet: "Boss, the drone's view shows they're regrouping in front of the control building, preparing for a second wave of attack."
The communication channel fell silent.
The only sounds were the crackling of the distant flames and the heavy breathing of the crowd.
Yuri could clearly sense the tension in everyone's emotions.
He leaned against the steel plate connecting the carriages and suddenly spoke:
"Lu, if you get the reward this time, what are your plans?"
Lu Ye was lying on the roof of the car, observing the situation ahead through the scope.
Upon hearing this unexpected question, he thought for a moment: "Boss, if I get the money, as a temporary mercenary, can I use the company's satellite communication channel?"
Yuri paused for a moment, then laughed: "Of course. What, are you planning to wire the money directly to your family?"
Lu Ye remained silent, which was taken as tacit agreement.
As Yuri loaded bullets into the empty magazine, he continued, "Lu, do you still consider yourself a temporary mercenary? Everyone saw your contribution in this assault."
"Once this mission is over and we return, I will apply to the company's higher-ups to officially include you in the Black Scythe Squad."
Lu Ye suppressed a slight ripple in his heart and calmly replied, "Thank you, boss."
Other people's voices immediately filled the channel.
"Well done, sniper! From now on, my back is in your hands!" Roman teased.
"Lu, you have to treat us when we get back! My half-case of vodka is still waiting for you at the base!" Artyom added with a laugh.
"When the time comes, remember to explain to me properly what those Chinese words mean," Ruslan chimed in.
These few brief exchanges dispelled the suffocating tension before the battle.
Yuri slammed the fully loaded magazine into his AK-12, his tone returning to seriousness: "Lu, sending money home is fine, but it'll incur a 10% fee if it's done through the company's encrypted satellite channel. Besides, I don't recommend sending all your earnings back."
"I've explained the rules of the Undertaker before. Although the pay is high, everything from body armor to firearms, ammunition, medkits, and even this drone, we buy with our own money. If you want to survive on the battlefield, you have to pay to upgrade your equipment."
"I know." Lu Ye's gaze didn't leave the scope. "I'll keep a large portion of it."
"Just keep it in mind." Yuri said no more.
Lu Ye was about to say something when Eugene's voice suddenly rang out in the channel:
"Enemy movement! Advance forward!"
-----------------
Lu Ye quickly composed himself and turned his gaze to the front lines of the battlefield!
The scene ahead made Lu Ye frown.
The first row of carriages was severely damaged in the explosion and firefight, with twisted steel debris lying haphazardly on the rubble.
While these wrecks greatly hindered the advance of enemy infantry, they also provided them with natural cover.
Most fatally, the wreckage completely blocked Ruslan's line of sight as he retreated to the bottom of the second-row carriage.
Ruslan lay prone under the vehicle, gritting his teeth: "I can't see them! The wreckage is blocking our view! We can only fire when they've crossed the pile of scrap metal!"
"I'll suppress it," Lu Ye said in a deep voice.
But he soon discovered that the enemy's tactics had changed.
With the roar of a diesel engine, the third BTR-80 armored vehicle rushed forward and stood directly in front.
"Bang!"
Lu Ye decisively pulled the trigger, sending the machine gunner on the armored vehicle flying with a single shot.
Another Ukrainian soldier immediately filled in.
"Bang!"
Lu Ye fired a second tungsten-core armor-piercing round, killing the new machine gunner once again.
[Kill 2 enemy soldiers, reward 200 points!]
After losing two men, the enemy seemed to realize something.
There were no machine guns, only sniper rifles!
Then the machine gun on top of the armored vehicle was completely abandoned, and the remaining infantrymen huddled behind the massive armored vehicle and in the blind spots of the wreckage, never showing their faces.
Without the machine gunners' obstruction, the armored vehicles advanced with extraordinary speed, quickly closing in on the wreckage of the first row of carriages.
"Approach the enemy on the west flank!" Eugene shouted.
"Contact on the eastern flank!" Artyom reported simultaneously.
The enemy's attack was completely synchronized.
As the firefight broke out instantly on both the east and west sides, the enemy's suppressive fire became extremely fierce.
Grenades kept exploding along the edge of the defensive line.
Lu Ye was positioned on the roof of the vehicle, which was under heavy enemy fire. Bullets struck the metal, sending sparks flying, forcing him to constantly roll and change firing positions.
"Land! Cover the west flank!" Yuri's voice rang out.
"receive."
Lu Ye abandoned the frontal assault, sliding half a meter to the right and aiming his sniper scope at the enemy troops advancing on the west side using sleepers.
Yuri and Eugene on the west side also completely abandoned defense and began to coordinate tactical plays.
"Flash cover! Eugene, cut to the left!" Yuri threw a stun grenade, then peeked out from behind cover and provided short bursts of rifle fire for suppression.
"Bang!" The moment the stun grenade exploded, Eugene slid off the right side of the chassis and began firing his rifle along the ground.
An enemy soldier attempted to launch a counterattack from a high vantage point over the cover, just revealing his shoulder.
"puff!"
Lu Ye's sniper bullet fell from the sky, shattering the enemy soldier's collarbone and neck.
"Two o'clock, two people behind the metal barrel!" Lu Ye reported the location on the channel.
Without any hesitation, Eugene pierced the thin metal barrel with his rifle, and blood splattered from behind it.
The other man tried to escape, but Yuri's underbarrel grenade landed precisely at his feet.
"boom!"
With Lu Ye's support, the tactical coordination on the west side was perfect.
With Yuri and Eugene being taller and shorter, and Lu Ye's long-range spotting, in less than a minute, the seven or eight enemy soldiers who had sneaked up from the west were completely wiped out, their corpses littering the ground.
"Clear the west flank!" Yuri quickly changed magazines.
[Kill 3 enemy soldiers, reward 300 points!]
However, the situation on the east side has reached a dead end.
"Click".
Artyom pulled the trigger, and the rifle made the sound of the bolt being pulled over.
"I'm out of bullets!"
"I'm out too!" Roman slung the empty magazine of his rifle over his back and drew his combat dagger from the side of his thigh.
Then they threw out their only two smoke grenades for cover.
The lack of ammunition forced the two on the east side to engage in brutal close-quarters combat.
Two Ukrainian infantrymen had just stepped across the gap at the junction of the carriages.
Artyom suddenly lunged out of the shadows, his left hand gripping the barrel of the enemy soldier's rifle as he lifted it upwards, while his right fist slammed into the man's throat.
The enemy soldier let out a muffled groan.
Artyom seized the AK-74, smashed the butt of the gun against the man's face, and then turned the gun around.
"Da da!"
The captured rifle was used to kill another enemy soldier behind him who was about to fire.
Just as Artyom opened fire, another person rushed out from the side.
Roman slid in close to the ground, his dagger precisely piercing the enemy soldier's femoral artery, then slashing upwards.
Blood gushed out, splattering all over Roman's face.
"Cover!" Roman roared, reaching for the rifle on the dead body on the ground.
