Chapter 735 - 586: Second Update
"Don’t put too much pressure on yourself," Ning Youguang said. "Don’t forget you’ve got a teammate—my brother-in-law. Make good use of him."
"I’d love to make good use of him," Xia Hui gave a wry smile. "The problem is he’s got a lot going on too. He’s out at work all day, and when he comes back at night I have to take care of the baby. By the time I coax the baby to sleep, he’s already fast asleep himself. I don’t really want to disturb him—no, it’s not that I don’t want to, it’s that I’m completely exhausted too, I’ve got no energy left to chat with him. You know, we’ve been so busy we don’t even have time to x anymore."
"Can’t you let the nanny watch the baby a bit more?" When Ning Youguang heard Xia Hui say this, she was a little speechless.
In Xia Hui’s home there was clearly a maternity nurse and a housekeeper—how was she still this worn out from looking after the baby.
"No, at night the baby has to fall asleep in my arms." Xia Hui had her own insistence. "At this stage, he needs a sense of security the most. Every night he has to grab onto my clothes before he can fall asleep, otherwise even if he does doze off he’ll wake up again soon and start crying, and then it’s really hard to get him back to sleep."
It seemed it wasn’t just the mother-in-law–daughter-in-law conflict that was making her cousin anxious.
Raising the child itself was making her anxious too.
"Can’t you really adjust things a bit? Why don’t you go learn from my cousin’s wife?" Ning Youguang suggested. "See how you can make things less hard on yourself?"
Her cousin’s wife and Chenchen got their own place after they got married. After she came out of the postpartum care center, they moved straight back to their own little home, and for childcare they only hired one maternity nurse.
They didn’t even have as many helping hands as her cousin did, and the kid was doing just fine.
She had never seen her cousin’s wife have as many worries as her cousin.
"I already asked her for advice before, but it doesn’t really work for me." When Xia Hui brought this up, her mood sank again. "Our situations are different. My brother has such a good temperament, and he really loves kids, likes children, and he’s very attentive in taking care of people. After Duoduo was born, my brother took care of him even more diligently than my sister-in-law. Of course she has it easy. I’m not the same—my husband doesn’t have as much patience as my brother."
Duoduo was Xia Chen’s son and already in primary school.
Ning Youguang understood.
Right now the biggest issue in her cousin’s household was her cousin herself.
"Do you feel exhausted every day?"
"Yeah. If I wasn’t exhausted, I wouldn’t be so busy with your brother-in-law that we don’t even have time for x." Xia Hui gave a bitter smile. "Ever since I gave birth, I feel like all my time and energy have been taken over by the baby. Just taking good care of him already wears me out—where would I still have the bandwidth to think about communicating and connecting with your brother-in-law? Don’t laugh at me, it’s not just that I don’t have the energy to talk to him, I don’t even have the patience to give him a hug."
—"Every night after I finally get the baby to sleep, all I want is to find a tiny little place to hide in this big, big world."
"There, there, head pats." Ning Youguang knew that whenever Xia Hui ran into problems, she just wanted to escape.
At the same time, she really did desperately need some space to herself.
"Because I never imagined a woman’s body could look this ugly after giving birth." Xia Hui said, "I haven’t dared to stand naked in front of the full-length mirror for months. At home I just wear loungewear every day, I don’t have the heart to dress up and I don’t want to. I want to get my figure back as quickly as possible before I even think about any of that."
"But your figure looks pretty good to me."
As a mom with a baby only a few months old, Xia Hui’s body really wasn’t ugly.
She was just a bit more rounded than before, soft and full.
But her skin was better than before, and even fairer.
Anyway, in Ning Youguang’s eyes, her cousin looked just fine—compared to when she’d been thin, there was a bit more cuteness to her now.
But what Ning Youguang thought looked good didn’t help.
"No, it’s bad." Xia Hui hop-hop-hopped off the bed, ran to the dressing mirror in the walk-in closet, lifted up her top, and pinched the round, squishy flesh on her belly for Ning Youguang to see. "Look, what is this?"
"Adorable chub," Ning Youguang leaned lazily back in her desk chair, her voice drawling and cutesy.
"Adorable my ass!" Xia Hui was almost unable to keep a straight face, amused by Ning Youguang’s playful tone.
Half exasperated, she said, "It’s so annoying ahhhhhhh!!!!"
—"I originally wanted to book a personal trainer for body sculpting two months ago so I could get back in shape quickly, but Grandpa refused no matter what. He said I have to wait until the baby’s a bit older, otherwise I’ll age faster in the future."
"Grandpa has a point." As a fellow TCM practitioner, Teacher Ning found it hard to disagree with her master’s professional judgment.
